Cargo Handling Automation Starts with Knowing What Is Coming

Cargo handling automation is usually heard as a headcount conversation, and that is the wrong frame. Very little of what a ground handler does can be automated away, and nobody serious is proposing it should be. Freight still has to be broken down, built up, moved, and released by people. What can be automated is the part nobody wants to be doing anyway: reconstructing what is about to happen from flight schedules, phone calls, and a whiteboard that was accuratean hour ago.


The Problem Is Sequence, Not Speed

Handling operations rarely lose time because a task takes too long. They lose it because the

tasks arrive in an order nobody could plan for.


 A build gets delayed, so a crew stands ready with nothing to work. A truck arrives for freight that has not been located yet. None of those are speed problems. They are sequencing problems, and they are caused by the operation finding out about things at the moment it has to deal with them.

Doors turn faster when the freight is staged before arrival, because the time a truck spends on the property is mostly time spent waiting for something to be found. And drivers validated at the point of booking rather than signed in at the door remove a manual step and a paper record in the same motion.

Establish where that number sits today before anything changes. That baseline is the whole business case, and it is the thing most operations discover they never captured. Ninety days later you either have a number that moved or a clear reason it did not, and both are more useful than another quarter of estimating.
